The kernel, in turn, initializes the rest of the operating system e. GNU GRUB is a very powerful boot loader, which can load a wide variety of free operating systems, as well as proprietary operating systems with chain-loading 1. GRUB is designed to address the complexity of booting a personal computer; both the program and this manual are tightly bound to that computer platform, although porting to other platforms may be addressed in the future.

One of the important features in GRUB is flexibility; GRUB understands filesystems and kernel executable formats, so you can load an arbitrary operating system the way you like, without recording the physical position of your kernel on the disk. Thus you can load the kernel just by specifying its file name and the drive and partition where the kernel resides.

When booting with GRUB, you can use either a command-line interface see Command-line interfaceor a menu interface see Menu interface. Using the command-line interface, you type the drive specification and file name of the kernel manually.

In the menu interface, you just select an OS using the arrow keys. The menu is based on a configuration file which you prepare beforehand see Configuration. While in the menu, you can switch to the command-line mode, and vice-versa.

You can even edit menu entries before using them.

Erich and Brian Ford designed the Multiboot Specification see Motivation in The Multiboot Specificationbecause they were determined not to add to the large number of mutually-incompatible PC boot methods.

He soon realized that it would be a lot easier to write his own boot loader from scratch than to keep working on the FreeBSD boot loader, and so GRUB was born. Erich added many features to GRUB, but other priorities prevented him from keeping up with the demands of its quickly-expanding user base. InGordon Matzigkeit and Yoshinori K. Over the next few years, GRUB was extended to meet many needs, but it quickly became clear that its design was not keeping up with the extensions being made to it, and we reached the point where it was very difficult to make any further changes without breaking existing features.

AroundYoshinori K. Except for specific compatibility modes chain-loading and the Linux piggyback formatall kernels will be started in much the same state as in the Multiboot Specification. Only kernels loaded at 1 megabyte or above are presently supported. Any attempt to load below that boundary will simply result in immediate failure and an error message reporting the problem. Chain-loading of other boot loaders is also supported.

Support a human-readable text configuration file with preset boot commands. You can also load another configuration file dynamically and embed a preset configuration file in a GRUB image file. The list of commands see Commands are a superset of those supported on the command-line. An example configuration file is provided in Configuration.Manjaro is a professionally made Linux based operating system that is a suitable replacement for Windows or MacOS.

I installed Linux Mint on my laptop along with a pre-installed Windows There is probably a command that I can type to boot from that prompt, but I don't know it. Using this technique, it always loads the menu. Rebooting without pressing F12 always reboots in command line mode.

As suggested in the comments, I tried purging the grub-efi package and reinstalling it. This did not fix the problem, but now when it starts in command prompt mode, GRUB shows the following message:. I checked with the blkid command and that is the identifier of my linux partition. Maybe this additional bit of information can help figure out what is going on?

The boot process can't find the root partition the part of the disk, that contains the information for starting up the systemso you have to specify its location yourself. I think you have to look at something like this article: how-rescue-non-booting-grublinux. This is some funny thing happening to many PC dual booting with Windows Happened to me and friends recently. Please note that I don't know why, I can only speculate this depends on some Windows 10 updates.

As someone said, indeed this is due to the boot process not finding the root partition for some reason, so GRUB asks you to tell him where it is via CLI. Anyway thanks for asking this question, I found it trying to fix my problem and I created this account just to answer this.

The fix is super easy :. Grub can only dual boot other installs in same boot mode as you booted grub. I ran into the same issue. And I found that sometimes when booting in windows 10 the boot order is changed.

I have two SSDs in my laptop. One has ubuntu and grub and the other has windows installed. The boot order is sometimes changed when windows 10 updates and puts the windows SSD first, causing the system to always boot into windows.

Once booted into your Linux Mint install and not a rescue disk or anything if you see that you are missing Windows from GRUB you will need to follow these steps:. The same issue occurred on my dell laptop with windows 10 and Linux mint So what happened was I was working windows and suddenly the hdd was missing from the disk list.

Window was working fine since it was on ssd drive. After being confused for a while I wanted to make sure if the hdd was functioning so I run a diagnostic from the bios after it was done I restarted the machine and got my grub listing back. I suddenly found that after some updates Windows has set the Fast boot option to enabled. After installing Linux Mint I hope this helps to give you a better understanding of how to look.Forums New posts Search forums. What's new New posts New profile posts Latest activity.

Thread starter lekkerlinux Start date May 3, Tags dual booting linuxes. Is it very complicated installing Manjaro or anything else to dual boot with my current Lubuntu installation?

manjaro bios grub

There is a lot of information about dual booting Windows and Linux, but not two Linux distros. Will I have to manually partition the hard drive or is there a option in, for example Manjaro or Solus that will allow me to easily install it alongside Lubuntu? TechnoJunky Well-Known Member. The answer depends on how you setup your current OS. Most likely you chose the 'let the installer do all the configuring for me' option.

It's the default for most of the distros I've seen. If so, when you boot up your new installation media, start out by going to Gparted, if it's not there install it. Then modify the current drive partition by shrinking it so that you have enough space for your new OS. Then go back and install. When you get to the partition selection section you'll have to do a manual setup.

I'm not sure what would happen if you made them to the original OS's grub, I assume no changes will be noticed. I haven't tried it myself. This is not to get back or to restore your Manjaro bootloader.

To restore your Manjaro bootloader, see this. This is to prevent your working Manjaro bootloader being overridden by other OS bootloaders. This can happen when the other OS updates its grub not update-grub. Note some OS's need command 'grub2-install'.

If need further elaboration, see here. When installing a new linux OS, at their installer, always select "installing bootloader to partition". We can also choose not to install bootloader, but selecting 'to partition' Manjaro calls this 'to system' is good enough and is preferable to have a bootloader installed at every OS. If you choose to uninstall Manjaro later on, remember to make the other OS bootloader as default before uninstalling.

Make sure Manjaro bootorder is at the beginning as above: "BootOrder: ," If it is not, reorder such that it is, like this:. Whenever we install another OS, it will be at the top of that bootorder; and we will need to reorder such that Manjaro is again at the top.

And we can do that at that install livecd media itself. If we forget, we can do it after installation at any OS. That alone should be sufficient for most UEFI systems. However in some situations and reported in some topics hereit is not possibly due to firmware issues.

The above steps do not ensure that Manjaro bootorder will be booted up. In these cases, one extra command is required. We can despite our efforts, still use the other OS grub to boot Manjaro, and might come in useful, particularly if the above methods seems daunting.

Or if we are stuck not being able to get to Manjaro bootloader. Then add the following in the newly created custom. And of course persists to any new Manjaro kernel. Jump to: navigationsearch. Navigation menu Personal tools Log in. Namespaces Page Discussion.
